How to Apply Protective Coating to Flexible Stone

A protective coating (protective agent) seals the surface of flexible stone after installation, protecting it from water, stains and UV while making cleaning easy. Mix the protective agent with water at a 1:7 ratio, spray horizontally then vertically in two passes, and roll with a flock roller. This guide explains the complete protective coating process.

Key Facts

  • Mix the protective agent with water at a 1:7 ratio before application.
  • Apply the coating in two passes: first horizontally, then vertically.
  • Use a flock roller to spread the coating evenly across the surface.
  • A protective coating makes flexible stone water-resistant, stain-resistant and easy to clean.

Why Apply a Protective Coating

Flexible stone is naturally low-absorption (under 0.5%), but a protective coating adds a durable shield that resists water, stains and UV damage. It also makes routine cleaning simple - a sealed surface wipes clean with water or mild detergent. For outdoor walls and wet areas, the protective coating is essential for long-term performance.

Step 1: Mix the Protective Agent

Mix the protective agent with water at a 1:7 ratio (one part agent to seven parts water). Stir thoroughly until the solution is uniform. Prepare only as much as you need for the current pass - the mixed solution does not keep.

Step 2: Apply the First Pass (Horizontal)

Spray the mixed solution across the surface in horizontal strokes, covering the full area evenly. Work in sections so the coating stays wet and blends without streaks.

Step 3: Apply the Second Pass (Vertical)

Immediately follow with a second pass in vertical strokes. Crossing the two directions ensures complete, even coverage and prevents missed spots.

Step 4: Roll with a Flock Roller

After spraying, roll the surface with a flock roller to spread the coating evenly and work it into the texture. This gives a uniform finish and helps the coating penetrate the surface.

When to Apply the Coating

Apply the protective coating after the adhesive has cured (24-72 hours after installation) and before the wall is exposed to heavy use or weather. Reapply periodically on outdoor walls according to the manufacturer’s recommendation to maintain protection.
