Curling Edges and Water Damage: The Complete Guide to Sealing Flexible Stone

Flexible stone is a bendable stone veneer that must be sealed at every edge and joint to keep water out. Unsealed edges allow moisture to travel behind the panel, which causes the edges to curl and the bond to fail over time. This guide explains how to seal flexible stone edges, joints and corners so the installation stays flat and watertight for decades.

Why Edges Curl

The edges of a flexible stone installation are its most vulnerable points. If a bottom edge or transition is left unsealed, water wicks behind the panel through capillary action. Repeated wetting, cleaning and foot traffic push the water further in, and the edge begins to lift and curl. Once the edge curls, the bond is compromised and the damage spreads.

Expansion Gaps and Joints

Flexible stone moves with temperature changes, so panels need room to expand and contract. Leave a 1.5-3 mm expansion gap between panels and fill it with a flexible joint sealant. Rigid grout or caulk that cannot move will crack and let water in - the sealant must flex with the panel, just like the panel flexes with the building.

How to Seal Edges and Corners
